“Loving Eunos, loving Singapore”
Living in this 21st Century world, most Singaporeans share similar lifestyle to one another. Some live life with interesting routine by having events and activities move them, while others live life meaningfully by taking their time be a part of some activities or events. As for my neighbourhood, I guess, we are living life based on the former description.
My neighbours and I hardly interact with one another. It seems like both of us are enclosed in our comfort zone most of the time. Other than greetings, there is nothing else I can vividly remember saying to my neighbours. Therefore, my aspiration would be to have a stronger bonding and an open minded community; breaking down the awkward walls between neighbours and valuing the culture diversity in our nation. It is non-deniable that my community club has provided a wide range of activities to bridge a better relationship among members of various racial and religious groups. However, there is always a limit as to what activities alone can achieve.
So what can we do next? What can I contribute to help?
There are many ways in which I can help to achieve my goal for my community.
I can start off by contributing to my neighbors in my community. Contributing, to me, is a way of giving. Giving can be in the form of money, time or any things that is beneficial to anyone in this society.
In my vicinity that I live in, my neighbors come from all walks of life. Some have children that are wealthy and continuously provides for them to ensure that their three meals are well fed. While on the other hand, there are families that barely can make ends meet. Thus, with the growing affluence of many individuals, my parents have always encouraged me to provide what we can to the less privileged and it should not be neglected. This can be done through means of distributing the unwanted, albeit useful, household items to benefit the less privileged. The donated items can have a wide range of variety such as: unwanted clothes or outdated electronic devices. These used items can be given a new lease of life, and to better the life of someone else!
Besides contributing these used items, I can set up portals to find out what my neighborhood really needs and lacks. In this portal, citizen in my neighborhood can post their wish list online with their address so that the donors that have and wish to contribute the item can send it to their house.
Through this platform, it also helps to strengthen and instill some of the Singapore core values such as to have community support as well as racial and religious harmony. With this, the less fortunate individual will have the support and help of the community to grow further. Hence, achieving my aspiration set for my community.
In my opinion, to be able to give is a blessing. As our country continues to progress, we should never neglect those around us. Infact, we should pull them along with us, progressing as a nation and not as an individual.
The simplest form of contribution can start from you today. So what are you waiting for?
